When you’re about to do some cabinet refacing, you can build a single base cabinet with a wall cabinet above it, or you can build several cabinets side by side for a full wall of storage or display. If you use a different type of lumber to build utility cabinets in a basement or garage, you can match the existing cabinetry from a kitchen or bathroom. When you do your cabinet refacing, you can stain the cabinets to match any piece of furniture you’d like.

When you’re doing your cabinet refacing, you should first take the doors off your cabinets and place them to the side. You’ll want to cover the insides of your cabinets with sheets, if you so choose. You can reface your cabinets completely, or you can reface only the doors. You can score the shims of the trim moldings with a utility knife, when you’re doing your cabinet refacing. Then remove the temporary ledger and patch the screw holes with wallboard compound. Cut the trim moldings to cover any gaps between the cabinet and the wall, and attach the trim with finish nails drive through pilot holes.

When you’re doing your cabinet refacing, you should build and finish the shelves with pin-style shelf support, then build or purchase overlay doors and attach them to the face frame. Sand and finish the cabinets, and once the finish dries attach the doors and door pulls and install the shelf support pins and the adjustable shelves.
